Airbnb.Org: This Is Not a Campaign. It’s a Model.

Something crossed my feed this week that changed how I think about crisis response.

Airbnb has had a complicated relationship in Montreal. We all remember the fire that took lives in March 2023, and the conversations that followed around regulation, safety, and accountability. It changed how cities look at short-term rentals.

Months later, in September 2023, Airbnb.org was launched to provide emergency housing in times of crisis.

What caught my attention this week was how that model is evolving.

A conversation with Christoph Gorder, Executive Director of Airbnb.org, on how they are approaching social impact very differently.

What stood out immediately is that Airbnb.org is not operating like a traditional corporate foundation.

Emergency housing. Delivered fast.

From 8 disasters to 78 in just two years.

This isn’t a communications initiative.
It’s an operational model built on speed, scale, and existing infrastructure.

And it raises a very practical question. What would this look like here?

In January, Montreal experienced a major power failure. It led to real distress, and in some cases, loss of life. Families were left in freezing homes in -30 weather, forced to make impossible decisions overnight.

Stay in unsafe conditions… or pay for a hotel room.

But what about those who couldn’t afford it?

Moments like this expose the limits of traditional response systems.

They also highlight the opportunity to think differently.

The shift: from communication to impact

This connects directly to something I’ve been writing about recently.

Most organizations are still communicating as if people will stop and read.

But what actually cuts through today is not just content.

It is relevance.
It is immediacy.
It is impact.

This also forces a more nuanced conversation.

Airbnb’s role in housing has been heavily debated, particularly in cities like Montreal. But reducing the housing crisis to a single platform misses the complexity of the issue.

Housing supply, regulation, zoning, enforcement, and affordability all play a role.

What’s more interesting is this:

The same platform that has been part of the tension is now demonstrating what it can look like to mobilize infrastructure in moments of need.

So the question becomes less about blame, and more about capacity.

When technology allows organizations to move quickly, what responsibility comes with that?

And how can cities think differently about working with, rather than only regulating, large platforms?

What leaders can take from this

The signals are clear:

Speed matters.
Partnerships matter.
Infrastructure matters.

But more than that, coordination matters.

Because in moments of crisis, the ability to activate what already exists can be the difference between delay and response.

And at the center of it, something even more important:

Dignity.

Giving people choice in how support is delivered, rather than forcing them into one system.

From where I sit, this is what modern response looks like.

And increasingly, this is what content that lands actually is.

Not something you explain.
Something you demonstrate.
